Based in Burlington, Massachusetts, Cooper Perkins is a technology development firm specializing in designing highly integrated electro-mechanical systems. Their track record of success is highlighted with patents, numerous international design awards and industry-specific recognition for innovation.
The firm was recently contracted by Kohler, a worldwide leader in plumbing products and bathroom fixtures, to design a high-end premium Ambient Rain™ overhead shower system.
Along with 54-nozzle sprayheads in ceiling panels, Kohler’s luxurious ceiling shower system features integrated chromatherapy LEDs that offer mood-enhancing colored light sequences to offer a truly customized shower experience.
Seals become increasingly important when integrated technology and circuitry meet water vapour in a premium product (the Ambient Rain™ system retails for about $1999).
“If the seals around the shower heads didn’t meet exact specs, there could be sealing issues and water vapour could cause problems,” states Matt Kowalczyk, a Design Engineer with Cooper Perkins. “Since this is a very first-class product, that type of failure was simply not an option. It had to offer the utmost performance and look absolutely perfect.”
Cooper Perkins needed a customized solution in a white or clear material that would meet tight design specifications – and they needed it fast.
“Delivery time was critical to the project and that was a big reason we went with Vicone“, continues Kowalczyk. “We needed a fast turnaround on a tailored seal that met our tolerance and compression factors at a reasonable price. Vicone was able to deliver the solution much quicker than anyone else.”
Vicone designed a custom seal solution and delivered the fast turnaround that Cooper Perkins needed – supplying a prototype in just over 2 weeks.
“The solution understandably had to promote top performance and long life,” recalls Vicone’s President Eric Leclair. “Matt knew what he wanted for the system and we had the knowledge and resources to do it. We developed a custom silicone seal and ensured the speedy development process and delivery that Cooper Perkins needed. All together we went from concept, molds, prototyping, testing, modifications, final production and delivery in less than 8 weeks.”
“Vicone was able to deliver the solution much quicker than anyone else.”
“The shower system is in production now, so the collaboration was ultimately a success for us and our client,” adds Kowalczyk. “I would definitely work with Vicone again. They’re an advisor as well as a supplier – and they’re very responsive.“
